Break confidentiality if she mentions suicidal thinking or intention
Explain to her that it is essential to inform her family as her life is under threat
Sometimes, she might threaten to not come back for help if you talk about it
In this case, it will help if you assure her of support and remember to involve her close family members
Talk to her family or caregivers about close monitoring and seeking help in crisis
- Not leaving her alone
- Enquiring whether she has access to a sharp object or hazardous material and keeping them away from her
- Making sure she does not overdose on any medication by having someone give it to her
Keep contact information for her close family and relatives
If she has reached out over the phone and refuses to give contact details after repeated requests and seems to be severely disturbed, inform the police helpline (100/103) and give them her contact number
You might be able to make a ‘no harm contract’ with her
- She agrees to not act on her suicidal thoughts and to seek help in crisis
- This does not guarantee her safety
If violence might increase the risk of attempted suicide
Ensure her safety by shifting her to a safe place such as a shelter home
Help her by limiting the perpetrator’s access
Discuss a plan for acting on or enhancing protective factors.
Help her identify the triggers and warning signs
“You tried harming yourself the last time when your partner accused you of ….”
