What mental health first aid is

Listen non-judgementally

“I am here to listen to you”

Ask

“For how long have you been facing the stresses?”
“What situations stress you the most?”
“Did you experience...”
“Do you think you’re able to manage when you’re stressed or does it go out of control? Is there anything I need to know about your physical health in past or at present?”

Support

Normalize distress.
Help her understand that feeling
negative emotions is natural
and that she is not alone.

Respect her privacy and confidentiality

Show awareness and sensitivity about the cultural meanings of confidentiality and privacy

Help her make
her own decisions

She may ask, “What would you do in my situation?” Be prepared to give clear answers
